Disease Details
This medicine is used for safe and effective treatment of Degenerative and Other Disc related diseases like Intervertebral disc disease (IVDP), Spinal stenosis (including Cervical and Lumbar stenosis), and Cervical spondylosis which are some of the medical conditions related to the spine.
Spine is an important part of the human body and any kind of problem in this part can be really hard on us. It is very difficult to hold together when a back pain or neck pain happens. It could be a signal for us to check if everything is fine with your spinal cord. The problem in the spine can also manifest as pain in other parts of the body as well. Things may get worse over time if no proper attention is paid and treatment is given. We may have come across people talking about disc pain and problems but we may not be much aware of what it is actually.
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDP)
Inorder ro understand what this medical condition is we must be familiar with the parts of the spinal cord. To put it simply Intervertebral disc disease is a common condition characterized by the breakdown (degeneration) of one or more of the discs that separate the bones of the spine (vertebrae), causing pain in the back or neck and frequently in the legs and arms. The intervertebral discs provide cushioning between vertebrae and absorb pressure put on the spine.
While the discs in the lower (lumbar) region of the spine are most often affected in intervertebral disc disease, any part of the spine can have disc degeneration. Depending on the location of the affected disc or discs, intervertebral disc disease can cause periodic or chronic pain in the back or neck. Pain is often worse when sitting, bending, twisting, or lifting objects. So one should not ignore these pains and it is better to consult a physician as soon as possible if you start feeling pain in the back or neck. Many times it is negligence that makes things go out of our hands.
Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spaces within your spine, which can put pressure on the nerves that travel through the spine. Spinal stenosis occurs most often in the lower back and the neck. There are two types of spinal stenosis, as follows
- Cervical stenosis: In this condition, the narrowing occurs in the part of the spine in your neck.
- Lumbar stenosis: In this condition, the narrowing occurs in the part of the spine in your lower back. It’s the most common form of spinal stenosis.
Some people with spinal stenosis may not have symptoms. Others may experience pain, tingling, numbness and muscle weakness.
Symptoms can worsen over time, hence one should rush to get medical assistance even if the symptoms are only light.
Symptoms
One should be aware of the symptoms that the body with stenosis may show. It is also tricky because many people have evidence of spinal stenosis on an MRI or CT scan but may not have symptoms. However when they do occur, they often start gradually and worsen over time. Symptoms vary depending on the location of the stenosis and which nerves are affected. The symptoms are not confined to the back and neck but rather affect other parts of the body.
- In the neck (cervical spine)
- Numbness or tingling in a hand, arm, foot or leg
- Weakness in a hand, arm, foot or leg
- Problems with walking and balance
- Neck pain
- In severe cases, bowel or bladder dysfunction (urinary urgency and incontinence).
- In the lower back (lumbar spine)
- Numbness or tingling in a foot or leg
- Weakness in a foot or leg
- Pain or cramping in one or both legs when you stand for long periods of time or when you walk, which usually eases when you bend forward or sit
- Back pain.
Cervical Spondylosis
Cervical spondylosis is a general term for age-related wear and tear affecting the spinal disks in your neck. In this condition what happens is that as the disks dehydrate and shrink with age signs of osteoarthritis develop, including bony projections along the edges of bones (bone spurs).
Cervical spondylosis is very common medical condition visible in aged people and it worsens with age. More than 85 percent of people above age 60 are affected by cervical spondylosis.
Symptoms
Most of the people affected by cervical spondylosis don’t show any symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they typically include pain and stiffness in the neck.
Sometimes, cervical spondylosis results in a narrowing of the space needed by the spinal cord and the nerve roots that pass through the spine to the rest of your body. If the spinal cord or nerve roots become pinched, you might experience:
- Tingling, numbness and weakness in your arms, hands, legs or feet
- Lack of coordination and difficulty walking
- Loss of bladder or bowel control.
